Region 1 Equestrian Vaulting Championships

We've just come back from Regionals at the Avi Casino and Resort in Nevada (near Laughlin)

Lex surprised us and did quite well. Not that we don't think she is absolutely amazing and talented, but we realize that as parents, we will feel that way no matter what the truth is. So, when she actually placed first in her Individual Freestyle, well, it came as a surprise :)

The following are compulsory moves, and many find them boring. Not me. Not Lex either. And despite the serious face, she does seem to love the hard work. This is a kid that actually cheers when her coach announces that it is a long conditioning day, ie: military style strength training. The work is paying off.

I'm amazed every time I see how physically strong she has become.

She does say that she wishes her back were more straight and more over the handles here. But I say, not bad considering a year ago it was a struggle to just get her ankles up and above the pad. I do wish I could get her smiling!

And now for her Freestyle, on Chawnie
-- her music was Call Me Maybe

ah, here's the smile, at last!

And my favorite picture from Nationals . . .

Oh -- and here is an old set of pictures from her 2012 Freestyle at Regionals in Vegas on the wonderful Opal.

Vaulting Etc.

I had a conversation yesterday and it reminded me that I've never really posted any vaulting things or any other horse stuff... kind of random, not instructional, its just stuff today.

(I have video I'll try to upload soon)

People ask me why I have such daredevil kids. My two pilot boys, who both paraglide, and my vaulting daughter. I'm not much of a daredevil myself, as a matter of fact, heights really freak me out. But, for some reason, I've ended up with kids that like to live on the adventurous side.

At least vaulting isn't as dangerous as eventing

It could still be a family thing. This is my sister's fall.

Yes, she and the horse lived through it, a little worse for wear, but alive.

A Loss of Taste

Recently, I lost my sense of taste.

Evidently, through the course of a sinus surgery, and tonsillectomy--yes, at my age, I had to have my tonsils out--I lost my ability to taste most foods. Thankfully, I can still smell.

Now, if a loss of taste were on the menu for weight-loss methods, I don't know that I would have chosen it.

But, I will use it.

I seem to be dropping a pound or two a week. Not bad. Until you consider what I was forced to give up; not just the loss of eating food in the course of a diet, but also the decided disadvantage of not being able to savor the juicy tang of a nectarine, the melting deliciousness of an icecream sundae, or the oh-so-divine Cadbury Mini Eggs that are back on store shelves for the upcoming Easter holiday.

All of it. Gone.

I'm handling it. I can do this. It very likely will come back. My taste buds might repair and come back. Eventually.

It's been 3 months already.

All that said,  I must add that a loss of taste, in no way has affected my taste for life. I have to tell you, the 40's are AWESOME!

Every day I find more of who I am, what I love and an increased ability to accomplish what I desire.

It's debatable if my sense of taste--my style sense--was in any way impaired or altered, either by my lack of taste-ability, or my zest for life-ability.  As evidenced by my posting of this photo--I kind of look like a dork--I just don't have much besides skiing pictures at the moment.

To wrap up, for the more curious folks:

A loss of taste is interesting. I can feel heat, as in jalapeno heat. I can feel mint. But I can't tell if I have bad breath. I hate that part. I'm an annoying gum chewer.

I find that cold, sweet items are gag-inducing gross. Chocolate is a tasteless waxy coating in my mouth.

I can almost, just almost, taste a savory, juicy, warm pot roast. Salt and vinegar chips, on the tip of my tongue have become a favorite, as I can feel the vinegar and salt. Although, as soon as it gets to the back of my tongue, it might as well be chewed up cardboard.

Along with taste, I have lost the brain connection between hunger and food. I almost always feel hungry, but I don't crave food. I have the hardest time associating eating as the way to end the hunger. I no longer get that burst of flavor reward that has you reaching into a bag of cookies or chips for 'just one more'. I eat because I have to. Nothing satisfies and despite some cravings for something, anything, to light up that reward center again, I never find it.

I do have one flavor that I can taste... bitter. There is an almost constant bitter taste on either side of my tongue that I am forever trying to drown with water, soda, tea --anything to wash it away.

For now, I savor those moments of smell; from warm cookies to a fresh-cut apple, from a piping hot wasabi burger to having a Wal-mart mountain of pastel packaged marshmallows stop me dead in my tracks.

I just wish I'd know that my last taste of chocolate was going to be my last taste of chocolate.

p.s.
WARNING: Be wary of any and all Pinterest repins that are on my Food and Cooking board. I pin for looks and possibilities, no longer do I pin food items for taste.

Double p.s.
I do have hope. I am saving a Milky Way bar--this exact bar, the one I was resisting until Christmas--for that day when I get my taste back. I know it will be stale. It's what it represents at this point.

Flyboys

My boys, my boys, and one little girl . . .

They may be off and living on their own, and some of this is just old memories coming up from the past, but I do love them. Think of them and wish I saw more of them.

My first flyboy is headed back out to work tonight after almost 6 months off work following an unfortunate back breaking accident. The accident, yes, from flying--not airline flying, (which is what he is finally headed back out to do) but a paragliding accident.

Digital editing of photos
This one knew from the age of 2 he wanted to fly. I thought he might have forgotten during the elementary years, but then came Jr. High Career Day--
First career on his list: Get married (I know--how funny is that!)
Second thing on his list: Pilot.

The second flyboy, is still doing just fine, still working the Cloud9 shop and launching paragliders whenever the weather permits. He wasn't flying today -- or, well, unless you consider flying downhill (along with a few other tumbling incidents) as flying.

In Justin's defense, it was a heavy spring rain/snow day (you can see that the weather wasn't the best) and he really did do some great spins that I took as well, it's just this one keeps cracking me up. And, it was the first video I captured of the day. Great way to start.

(Lex is the one in purple. This is her first year of actual skiing and snowboarding.)

Yes, we like to have some good old family fun.

Cabin anniversary weekend

Just a quick post to try and convey some of what our anniversary weekend was like...

We got snowed in at the cabin - can you say delightful! Mom and Dad ended up staying the weekend. It was such a nice, comfortable and peaceful way to spend our anniversary.

The cabin - from below in the meadow

We went for a 4-runner ride up and around - we had to stop and warm up at the hotwell!

do you dare me to touch it?

...and the cabin is gorgeous! Gary did fantastic cabinetry work and mom did such a great job doing tile - oh, and all the work she did to make handmade patchwork quilts for every bed!

Mom and Dad have basically built this whole cabin. The logs walls were raised by a contractor, but all the inside stuff - well, that's all family! Justin did plumbing, Gary the cabinets, Jason the case and base, Sara & Angie the caulking and the rest was pretty much mom and dad - and at their age! I manage to do a lot in my life, but I'm still playing catch up to my parents. They run circles around me.

Dance Recital

Coming up in just a few days Alexis will have her Dance Recital!

I'll be posting some photos very soon...
______________________

Here they are!

Alexis had a storytelling part - she told a story intermixed with the dancing inbetween. She memorized SO much - it was amazing!

That little girl has a memory and seems to be quite the little performer on top of that.

Oh, she did inform me that there was no way she was going to "...use as much expression as you do mom" - yes the girl used the word 'expression'.

As you can see, I think she still did use a bit of expression ;)

... the costumes were ADORABLE, I just wish I could have snapped some better photos.

Thai did a lot of work on the backdrop - it was incredible! So much detail - Look, there are even litte pom poms on the dress and toes!

Now I get to scrap it all!
