Cabin anniversary weekend

Just a quick post to try and convey some of what our anniversary weekend was like...

We got snowed in at the cabin - can you say delightful! Mom and Dad ended up staying the weekend. It was such a nice, comfortable and peaceful way to spend our anniversary.

The cabin - from below in the meadow

We went for a 4-runner ride up and around - we had to stop and warm up at the hotwell!

do you dare me to touch it?

...and the cabin is gorgeous! Gary did fantastic cabinetry work and mom did such a great job doing tile - oh, and all the work she did to make handmade patchwork quilts for every bed!

Mom and Dad have basically built this whole cabin. The logs walls were raised by a contractor, but all the inside stuff - well, that's all family! Justin did plumbing, Gary the cabinets, Jason the case and base, Sara & Angie the caulking and the rest was pretty much mom and dad - and at their age! I manage to do a lot in my life, but I'm still playing catch up to my parents. They run circles around me.

Time Flies doesn't it?

How did your Christmas go? We had snow, snow ...

and more snow!

We tried to keep it simple, we all headed down south to the canyon and had a Cabin Christmas! Paper chains, popcorn and paper snowflakes on the tree. We didn't go overboard on the gifts, just spent time together - it was a nice change of pace.

The kids LOVED being able to walk right out the door and sled down the hill, taking hot cocoa breaks as needed. I think we've started a new tradition. We even had Sm'ores around the campfire on Christmas night.
I think I managed to get some great snapshots that I'll get to scrapping - ya think?
Okay, so it has been LONG time no Blog - What else is new?
It's JANUARY!!!

What HAVE I been doing? Well, besides the Holidays, going back to work and submitting my picture book to an agent!?

Yep, I did it. Now I just wish I could reach into the mail and pull it back. It's so hard to let it go out into the big wide world. What if it gets lost in the slush pile, what if he doesn't like it? I can't possibly think I'll get published can I? What was I thinking??!!
So how many of you are into goal setting and the whole New Year Resolutions thing?
I have to admit that I'm not big on the whole it's-January-set-your-goals kind of girl. On the other hand I do set goals, write them down (I swear there is some kind of magic that happens when you WRITE your goals, before you know it, it seeems that they happen) and work on obtaining them. Just not in January. It's like going to the gym in January, it's freakin' crowded in there! I prefer to achieve my goals alone, quietly and most of all, not because of peer pressure.
Well, I have a LOT of catching up to do, check out all your blogs - I can't wait to see what you all are up to for "oh-9"!

Vacation!

As for the rest of life, I'm hanging in there. Keeping too busy to do much.

Being a suddenly single parent (temporary as it may be) is a challenge!

There is no 'extra' somebody to do the grocery shopping while I help with homework, there is no extra helper to fold laundry while I'm cooking dinner. No extra partner there to even just help decide what projects need doing today.

Lex is enjoying my undivided attention for now. She has me all to herself. And I, of course, pay her the attention instead of doing all my normal projects that I used to be able to do.

Anyway, it's all an adjustment and I'm sure it will get figured out eventually. I just need to make sure I've got some creative time. I get very cranky and fidgity and even a tad unhinged if I don't release some of my pent-up energy in a creative constructive way.

Oh - hey BIG NEWS!!!

Lex and I are headed EAST FOR SPRING BREAK!!!!

We are starting in Virginia, then driving up through Pennsylvania, New York and wherever else we need to so that we end up in Connecticut! Then back down to Virginia before we leave 10 days later!

It's going to be FANTASTIC!

Two of my sisters and their families are in VA & CT, hence the destinations :)

If you've got recommendations of things we absolutely HAVE to make time for, do tell!

Connecticut, Boston & Martha's Vineyard

Whew, what a LOT of traveling we have been doing!

After a few days in Virginia, riding horses, meeting Brit Hume, petting goats and catching sunsets...

PhotobucketPhotobucket

We took off and blew right through the top of Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania (with only a few stops - Chocolate World and Samuel the harness maker's shop)

and on above New York City. We landed in the fascinating and old town of Stafford Springs CT.

Then it was a day trip into Boston for a Science Museum Duck Tour via the Penelope Pru:

It was a Blast - literally; cold, windy and totally fun! Lex even got to drive the duck out in the water - thrilling stuff for a 6 year old!

Lex as Captain!

Now today it is off to Martha's Vineyard for some cruising and playing and exploring. Yes, it's a tad chilly, but hey there really is something to be said for this off-season travel: : Less expensive, room on tours and ferries and total clearance prices in the stores :)

Ferry from Cape Cod to Martha's Vineyard

Shopping in MV, oh and a bit of photo taking too ;)

There are seriously more shells than rocks here!

Got to take some home for Grandma W!

... and that's it for now - it's New York City and Jersey to see if we can see Dad tomorrow!

What day is it anyway?

What day is it? Nothing like some midnight, all night, over night travel to get your days all mixed up. I think I’m missing a few days by the way – have you seen them?

Now that I’ve had a night of sleep, a day of hanging out and a bit of chocolate therapy combined with a side of caffeine, I think I’m about ready to join the land of the thinking and actually DO something constructive. Nothing heavy, just, oh maybe make a few phone calls; “Yeah, we are here. Yep, we made it in. No, no problems. We made it ahead of the spring storm, the only delay being some advance winds that really made the last few minutes before landing in JFK a real tummy turner of a ride. Lex summed it up nicely when she said, “Mom, my tummy has the hiccups and it thinks it’s trying to throw up.”

Oh, speaking of the JFK Airport, have you been there? What an interesting place! Everyone was in such a hurry. Seriously, there was not a single person that was not almost, if not already, running. Weaving in and out of each other at a pace that brought to mind a hive of busy ants. Oh and maybe it was just because of our tipsy tummies, but I really noticed all those very traditional morning smells. The smell of coffee wafting across and among the rushing travelers, the super sweet smell of a Dunkin’ Donuts getting ready to open. Me, not being a person that can handle sweet in the morning, and not being a coffee drinker, it was a bit much. It was a relief to get to our gate and not have any smells to fend off. Thankfully that hour was enough of a break to get our insides back on an even keel before taking off for Washington Dulles.

I always forget how many PINE TREES there are here in the East. Pine, Pine, stand of leaf-less-as-yet ‘other’ kind of trees, then pine, pine and pine again. That and all the rolling hills, hill after hill, twisty up and over winding hills and the roads that divide them. Quite like what I am doing on vacation this week. I’m exploring those roads. Unwinding, standing tall and emerging from winter.

Part of the fun of being here is getting reacquainted not only with my sister, but also my little niece and young nephew. Being the person I am, I had to snap a few snapshots. Here are a few that summed up the following day:

That impish grin...

An innocent sibling...

And a visiting cousin...

...who, as yet, is unused to playing with said impish boys!

2007 in Review

Well, it was busy year, a year of many firsts and a few lasts, all in all, a year to remember, cherish and savor ....

January brought our traditional ski vacation

Photobucket

This year Lex learned to ski

Photobucket

and Amber to snowboard

Photobucket
...well kind of...

January also requires a bit of snowmobiling with the grandparents ;)

Photobucket

Lex and Bri are such goofs! I love getting snapshots like this!

Photobucket

In May Justin got a new car. I'm sure Amber was involved in the decision, at least a little bit...

Photobucket

Lexy had her first music recital

Photobucket

And on Mother's Day Jester had kittens :)

Photobucket

By June Lex was taking her first Ferris Wheel ride

Photobucket

and we moved into our new house - take a look at this view!

Photobucket
In July Jason and Thai both made a visit home, albeit separately poor kids. While Jason was in Utah Thai had her first car accident. Now they too have a new car.

Photobucket

Lex learned to swim on our St. George vacation

Photobucket

and by the 24th we had the extended Evans family visiting, which of course always means a trip to the canyon (Fairview) for some fishing

Photobucket

eating

Photobucket

and playing

Photobucket

Photobucket

August found Amy super busy with Storytelling Festival work while Brian took Lex on her first 5k fun run - woot!

Photobucket

Labor Day found all of us but Amy headed to the Idaho/Wyoming border for the annual Yellowstone vacation.

Photobucket

Photobucket

Getting into a new house is not for the weak of heart - or body, Brian tackled the yard, building rock walls, leveling flower beds and making sure we got lawn.

All too soon, Lex started Kindergarten at Challenger, she was more than ready, even if we were not!

Photobucket

She also is a young volunteer at the library!

Photobucket

September brought Jason and Thai back to Utah as Jason finished Flight School and started teaching at UVSC

Photobucket

While Tiffany and Jesse started thier family with thier first baby James

Photobucket

Madeleine and Emma got a new sister, Elizabeth, in October

Photobucket

Amy flew to Tennessee for the National Storytelling Festival in Jonesborough

Photobucket

By Halloween Lex was portraying a super cute Flapper

Photobucket

And, not ones to let a bit of chilly November weather stop us Lex, Bri and I went to the Zoo for some quality family time.

Photobucket

Photobucket

Jason, never the patient one, applied to Mesaba airlines and, I guess not so surprisingly given his drive and motivation, got the job!

Photobucket

December brings with it a chance to get together with the entire White clan, a time to snap one last photo before Jason leaves for more flight training and, heartbreakingly, Justin and Brian prepare to take off for the war in '08.
